A horse float is not just a trailer — it's a moving stable that your horses must feel safe in. A poorly maintained or structurally compromised float is a risk to the horses it carries and to the driver on public roads.

PPSR Check First

Floor Integrity — The Most Critical Check

The floor is the most important structural component in any horse float, and the most commonly neglected. Horses weigh 400–700kg each — a compromised floor can fail under load.

Timber floors:

  • Press firmly on every section of the floor — there should be no flex or soft spots
  • Get underneath and inspect the timber from below — look for rot, particularly where timber contacts steel frames
  • Any timber that feels soft or shows dark discolouration should be replaced before use

    • Aluminium or composite floors:

  • Check for cracks or deformations
  • Inspect fastening points to the frame

    • Partition and Breast Bar

  • All partitions must be structurally sound and not able to collapse under horse weight or movement
  • Hinges and latches must operate smoothly and latch securely
  • Breast bars must be at the correct height for the horses being transported and must not have sharp edges

    • Ramp

  • Lower and raise the ramp — it must operate smoothly under its own weight
  • Grip surface must be intact and effective
  • Ramp hinges and locking mechanism must engage positively

    • Ventilation

    Horses overheat quickly in enclosed spaces. Check:

  • All vents open and close freely
  • Screens are intact (prevent horses from striking against vents)
  • There is adequate airflow through the float with all doors closed

    • Electrical and Lights

  • All lights must function correctly
  • Check wiring for brittleness, exposed conductors, and damaged connectors

    • Towing Compliance

    Before purchasing any horse float, confirm:

  • Your tow vehicle's rated Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) exceeds the float's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) when loaded with your horses
  • The coupling type is compatible with your tow vehicle
  • Electric brakes are functioning if fitted (required over a certain weight threshold)
