Australia's Most Written-Off Car Models — 2026 Data Report
Based on 9,213 vehicle checks run through National VIN Check, here's which car makes and models are most commonly flagged as statutory or repairable write-offs across Australia — and how that varies by state.
Published by National VIN Check · Data current as of July 2026 · Methodology below
Every year, thousands of written-off vehicles quietly re-enter Australia's used car market — repaired, re-registered, and sold without buyers ever knowing their history. We analysed 9,213 vehicle checks run through our platform between January 2026 – July 2026 to identify which makes and models show up most often with a write-off flag, and how that varies by state.
This isn't a claim about which cars are least reliable — a write-off reflects an insurance or damage event, not a manufacturing defect. But if you're buying used, knowing which models are statistically more likely to carry write-off history is a genuinely useful data point before you commit to a purchase.
Key Findings
- 1Holden dominates the list — the top three most-flagged models (Commodore, Captiva and Cruze) are all Holdens, reflecting their enormous sales volumes through the 2000s.
- 2The Holden Commodore is the single most commonly write-off-flagged model in our dataset.
- 3New South Wales records the highest write-off rate of any state at 24%, followed closely by Victoria at 22%.
- 4Write-off rates are around six times higher in NSW (24%) than in the ACT or NT (4% each).
Most Written-Off Models — Full Table
| Rank | Make & Model | Description | Most common state |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Holden Commodore | The Commodore has consistently held the top spot for write-off frequency for six years running. Its high original sales volume through the 2000s means huge numbers remain on the road, with an average age of roughly 19.8 years at the time of a write-off flag. | NSW |
| 2 | Holden Captiva | The second most commonly flagged model in our dataset, the Captiva typically reaches the end of its economical service life at an average age of around 14 years. | VIC |
| 3 | Holden Cruze | The third most frequently flagged model, with an average age of approximately 13 years when a write-off is recorded. | QLD |
| 4 | Toyota Camry | A long-lasting model that still appears frequently, the Camry often reaches an average age of 22 years before being retired. | NSW |
| 5 | Toyota Corolla | Like the Camry, the Corolla is a high-volume vehicle that commonly stays in service for around 22 years before it is no longer economical to repair. | NSW |
Write-Offs by State
Write-off rates vary meaningfully by state, likely reflecting differences in flood/storm exposure, traffic density, and insurer write-off thresholds.
Percentages represent the share of checks in each state that carried a write-off flag.
Why This Matters When Buying Used
A repairable write-off can be legally repaired, re-registered, and sold in Australia — and sellers aren't always required to volunteer this history. That's exactly why a PPSR and VIN check before purchase matters more than a visual inspection alone. A few dollars up front can reveal finance owing, stolen status, and write-off history that a test drive never will.
Methodology
- Sample size
- 9,213 vehicle checks
- Date range
- January 2026 – July 2026
- Source
- Aggregated, anonymised results from checks run through National VIN Check's platform.
- Limitations
- This data reflects vehicles checked through our platform and may not represent the full national used-car market. Users self-select to check specific vehicles, which may skew results toward higher-risk purchases.
- Update schedule
- This report is updated bi-annually — last updated July 2026.
