Stolen motorcycles are sold through two main channels:
1. Direct resale with false plates
The thief replaces the registration plates with plates from a similar but legitimate bike. The VIN on the frame is left untouched. This is detectable with a VIN check because the VIN and plate won't match.
2. Rebirthing
A stolen bike is fitted with the VIN plate and paperwork from a written-off or legitimately deregistered bike of the same make and model. This is more sophisticated and is why checking the physical VIN stamp (not just the plate) is essential.
How to Check Before Buying
Step 1: Run a National VIN Check

Step 2: Verify the VIN Physically
The VIN should be stamped (not riveted or attached with adhesive labels) directly into the frame at the steering head. If the stamp looks tampered with, inconsistent, or unusually clean compared to surrounding metal, be suspicious.
Step 3: Cross-Check VIN Against Plate
Ask for the registration certificate and verify that the VIN on the certificate exactly matches the VIN stamped on the frame. Any mismatch is a serious red flag.
Step 4: Check the Seller's Identity
The registered owner on the registration certificate should match the person selling the bike. Ask for photo ID and check it matches.

Do not purchase the bike. Note the VIN, plate, and seller's details if safe to do so, and contact your local police. Purchasing a stolen vehicle — even unknowingly — can result in the vehicle being seized with no compensation.
