How to Read a PPSR Result: A Plain-English Guide for Australian Buyers

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is the authoritative national database for security interests on personal property. A PPSR search is non-negotiable before any used vehicle purchase — but the results can seem technical and confusing. Here's what everything means.

What a Clean Result Looks Like

If no security interests are registered against your searched VIN or plate, you'll see a message along the lines of: "No results found." or "The search returned no results."

This is the ideal outcome. It means no lender has registered a financial interest against the vehicle on the national register.

What a Result With Finance Looks Like

If finance is registered, you'll see one or more registration records. Each record contains:

Grantor

The grantor is the borrower — in most cases, this is the person who took out the original finance. If this is the same as the current seller, it's the most common scenario. If it's a different person or a company, there may be a more complex history.

Secured Party

The secured party is the lender — the bank, finance company, or individual that holds the security interest over the vehicle. Common secured parties include ANZ, Westpac, Macquarie, Latitude Financial, Toyota Finance, and others.

Registration Date

When the security interest was registered. Recent dates may indicate current active finance; older dates may indicate finance that was never formally discharged.

Status: Active

An active status means the registration has not been discharged. This is the situation you need to resolve before purchase.

Status: Discharged

A discharged status means the finance has been repaid and the registration formally removed. This is a clean outcome.

Collateral Description

This describes what the security interest covers — for vehicles, it typically shows "Motor Vehicle" or the specific VIN.

What to Do If You Find Finance

  • Do not panic: — finance on the PPSR doesn't automatically mean you can't buy the vehicle
  • Contact the seller: — ask them to explain the finance and commit to discharging it
  • Get written confirmation: from the lender that the debt will be discharged before or at settlement
  • Check again: after the claimed discharge — PPSR updates usually take 1–3 business days
