PPSR Check vs REVS Check: The Short Answer

The old REVS register was folded into the national Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) on 30 January 2012. So a "REVS check" today *is* a PPSR check — same purpose, wider coverage, one national database.

What Was a REVS Check?
REVS stood for the Register of Encumbered Vehicles. It was a state-run database — most closely associated with NSW, though Queensland and the ACT ran equivalents — that recorded whether a vehicle had money owing on it. Buyers used a REVS check to make sure they weren't about to purchase a car that could be repossessed by a finance company.
The problem: REVS was state-based. A car financed in Victoria might not show up cleanly on a NSW REVS search. In a country where vehicles cross borders constantly, that was a dangerous gap.
Why REVS Became the PPSR
In 2012 the federal government consolidated more than 20 separate state and territory registers — including all the REVS systems — into a single national register: the PPSR. One search now covers every state and territory at once.
