Used Cars With Finance Owing in Australia — 2026
Around 1 in 6 used cars we checked still carried a PPSR security interest — money owing to a lender. Here's how that risk varies by state and by how old the car is.
Published by National VIN Check · Data current as of July 2026 · Methodology below
If you buy a car that still has finance owing, the lender's security interest travels with the vehicle — not the seller. In the worst case, the financier can repossess the car you just paid for. Across our sample, 16.8% of checks — roughly 1 in 6 — returned a PPSR security interest.
The likelihood rises sharply for newer vehicles, which are far more likely to have been bought on finance that hasn't been paid off. That makes a PPSR check especially important on late-model private sales.
Key findings
- 1About 16.8% of all checks — roughly 1 in 6 used cars — still had money owing.
- 2Newer cars are the riskiest: 41% of vehicles aged 0–3 years carried a security interest, versus just 4% of cars over 10 years old.
- 3NSW records the highest state finance-owing rate at 19%, followed by Victoria at 18%.
- 4Even in the lowest state, more than 1 in 10 used cars still had finance owing.
