Which cars are most likely to turn up with a stolen flag? We analysed 9,213 checks to rank the most-targeted makes and models — and where theft is most concentrated.

Vehicle theft in Australia is dominated by high-volume, high-demand models — and utes in particular. A stolen car doesn't just disappear: many are re-birthed with a false identity, stripped for parts, or quietly re-sold to buyers who never run a check.
We looked at which makes and models appear most often with a stolen flag in our data, and which states record the highest concentration. This isn't a reliability ranking — it reflects how desirable a vehicle is to thieves and how many are on the road.
Key findings
- 1Utes dominate — the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger take the top two spots, reflecting both their sales volume and strong resale/parts demand.
- 2Five of the top eight most-flagged models are utes or light commercials.
- 3Victoria and Queensland are the most common theft hotspots across the leading models.
- 4High-value 4WDs like the LandCruiser are targeted for organised theft and export, despite lower overall volumes.

- 9,213 vehicle checks run through National VIN Check between January 2026 – July 2026, aggregated and anonymised.
- Data sources
- Official PPSR (administered by AFSA), NEVDIS, the national stolen vehicle register, and the Written-Off Vehicle Register (WOVR).
- Limitations
- Figures reflect vehicles checked through our platform, not the full national fleet. Users self-select to check specific vehicles, which can skew results toward higher-risk purchases.

- This report is refreshed periodically — last updated July 2026.
